Opportunities at Allegan County Area Technical & Education Center

Become a Certified Nurse Aide (CNA)

You can get the knowledge, skills and confidence to assist patients with
health and daily living activities in a healthcare setting! The Certified Nursing
Aide program is a 98-hour program with a state approved curriculum which
qualifies you to take the Michigan CNA Exam (exam not included).

Machine Shop Training

In this 60-hour introductory course, you will learn basic skills used in a machine shop. Students will earn how to interpret blueprints, practice applied math, learn to use measurement hand tools and practice basic skills on mills and lathes.

Learn How to Weld

The Intro to MIG & TIG Welding course will explore the processes commonly known as MIG welding (Gas Metal Arc Welding) and provide entry level experience in Gas Tungsten Arc Wleding (TIG). At the completion of this 40-hour course, students will have practiced welding using both processes, will recognize simple weld symbols and have an understanding of written welding procedures.

Learn Construction Basics

This course is designed for students interested in an entry-level position in the building Industry. Students will become familiar with conventional construction techniques, will learn basic blueprint reading, and practice the use of hand and power tools used in residential construction. Students will learn to identify and select correct materials, build floors, walls and roofs systems, install doors, windows, roofing and siding to meet industry standards.

Become a Certified Nurse Aide

Train for a new career in health care AND earn your GED! Participants will enroll in Muskegon Community College and receive college credit upon completion.

Classes M-W-F from 9:00am to 4:00pm at West Michigan Works! in Muskegon
Ten-week program
Classes begin 9/16

Open to individuals seeking high school completion or GED. Participants must be enrolled in adult education at one of the providers in Muskegon: Orchard View Community Education, Fruitport Community Education and White Lake Community Education

Become a CNC Operator/Programmer

Basic Machine Shop:
Acquire essential hands-on experience in the proper operation of tool room equipment found in many manufacturing environments, such as milling machines, lathes, and drill presses. Students will also learn about precision measurement equipment, blueprint reading, shop mathematics, properties of metals and many formulas and setups that can be used on the job.

CNC G-Code Programming:
This course instructs students on how to program and produce parts on the CNC mill and lathe using G-code and conversational programming. Students will learn through both immersive virtual training software and hands-on experience with Hass Mazak Milltronics machining centers. Students completing this program will qualify for entry-level CNC positions. If a student has prior experience in basic machining and instructor approval, they may opt out of the basic machining.

Become a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA)

A Certified Nursing Assistant, also called a CNA, provides assistance to patients with daily living tasks. CNA’s typically work in nursing homes, hospitals, and other long-term care facilities and may also assist doctors and nurses with medical procedures. The Certified Nursing Assistant course includes classroom work, skills labs, and clinical experience. Contact Thompson M-TEC for dates. Upon course completion, students are eligible to take the State of Michigan Licensing Test for the Competency Evaluated Nurse Aid certification, renewable annually.

Learn How to Weld

This program consists of three welding classes which provide basic welding training to the inexperienced welder whose goal is to perform MIG and TIGwelding. Students must complete Welding I, MIG/GMAW Welding, and TIG/GTAW Welding.

Welding I:
Welding I is a 44 hour course that offers hands-on training in gas, arc, and oxyacetylene cutting welding processes.

MIG/GMAW Welding
MIG/GMAW welding is a self-paced project based 28 hour course that emphasizes personal instruction while students work with a variety of welding applications. MIG/GMAW welding will include gas metal arc welding, trouble shooting

and minor repair to MIG welder, basic principles pertaining to the MIG welding process; Butt, Lap and Tee welds in the flat position on various metal thicknesses, and introduction and limited practice on aluminum MIG.

Prerequisite: Basic welding experience

TIG/GTAW Welding:
TIG/GTAW welding will include basic principles pertaining to the TIG welding process, introduction to and practice on three alloys including aluminum, stainless steel and cold rolled steel. Course content is individualized to the student’s need for experience on TIG welding for professional and/or personal use.

Prerequisite: Basic welding experience

Become a Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA)

This program includes instruction on how to function in an administrative role within the medical office. It includes patient scheduling; tracking patient activity; maintaining the integrity and protection of patient information; sending and receiving reminders, messages, and emails. This program also provides the knowledge and skills needed to successfully perform insurance and billing related duties in a medical office. Certification: Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) through the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
